How Australian accounting firms process CommBank, Westpac, NAB and ANZ bank statements automatically (2026)

QuickBooks is switching Australian bank feeds to Open Banking, leaving gaps. How firms convert CommBank, Westpac, NAB and ANZ statements and fill missing months without duplicates.

A NAB client's QuickBooks feed went quiet on 1 September. Westpac follows on 18 November, ANZ on 24 November and CBA on 3 December 2026, as Intuit moves Australian QuickBooks Online users off legacy bank feeds and onto Open Banking. Each client who doesn't reconnect in time leaves a gap in the bank account, and it usually surfaces right before a BAS is due.

Quick answer: Australian firms automate CommBank, Westpac, NAB and ANZ statements in two layers. A live bank feed covers new transactions. For everything the feed misses (gaps, history, new clients, closed accounts), firms run the PDF statement through an extraction tool and check the balances. Then they import the result as a file or publish it to the ledger. Reconciliation still happens in Xero, QuickBooks Online or MYOB.

We make tofu, so weigh our view with that in mind. The bank, Intuit, Xero, MYOB and ATO details below come from their own pages, linked in the sources.

What is changing with QuickBooks bank feeds in Australia?

Intuit's notice is direct. From 18 August to 3 December 2026, QuickBooks "will progressively disconnect all legacy bank feeds". The new feeds run on Open Banking, which Intuit describes as mandated by the ACCC under the Consumer Data Right.

Here are the dates Intuit lists, bank by bank.

BankLegacy feed disconnectsStatus at 4 October 2026
Most other banks18 August 2026Already disconnected
NAB1 September 2026Already disconnected
Bank of Melbourne, St George, Bendigo, Suncorp, BankSA, Bankwest, Macquarie, Bank of Queensland15 September 2026Already disconnected
Westpac18 November 2026Still to come
ANZ24 November 2026Still to come
CBA3 December 2026Still to come

Three lines in the notice matter most to a firm.

  • Once a legacy feed is disconnected, "your transactions will stop importing into QuickBooks". Intuit says you can reconnect through Open Banking or "manually upload your bank transactions."
  • "Your settled transaction history won't be deleted, but any unreviewed transactions will be cleared." Review and accept what's sitting in the feed before the cutover.
  • Some account types, including companies, partnerships and trusts, need to nominate a "data sharing delegate" at the bank before they can connect. Set that up early, because the feed can't connect until it's done.

When you reconnect, Intuit tells you to choose the date transactions import from, and recommends "selecting today's date to avoid duplicate transactions." That advice is sensible. It also means the days between the old feed stopping and the new one starting won't fill themselves.

Does this affect Xero or MYOB?

The Intuit notice covers QuickBooks only, and we found no matching switch-off schedule from Xero or MYOB. Xero's Australian bank page says its feeds "operate under the Consumer Data Right framework". MYOB announced in February 2026 that from 1 March 2026 it would "phase in Open Banking as the default connection" for MYOB Business and AccountRight. Neither page gives a cut-off date for older feeds.

So Xero and MYOB firms aren't facing the same deadline. They still get feed gaps, though, for the ordinary reasons covered below.

What do CommBank, Westpac, NAB and ANZ statements look like?

Each bank offers a different mix of PDF statements and transaction exports. Here is what their own help pages say.

BankOfficial statementTransaction exportHow far back online
CommBank (NetBank)PDF eStatementCSV only. New NetBank says OFX and QIF export "is no longer available"eStatements kept up to 7 years; up to 2 years after an account closes
Westpac (Online Banking)PDF eStatementCSV, QBO, QIF or OFX from desktop. QBO and OFX need a single account selectedClosed account statements kept 7 years; Worldwide Wallet only 13 months
NAB (Internet Banking)PDF statement, up to 25 downloaded at onceSpreadsheet, QIF or PDFUp to 7 years of statements in Internet Banking, 2 years in the app; 731 days of transaction history
ANZ (Internet Banking)PDF statement, open and closed accountsCSV, QIF or OFX, last 2 years, open accounts onlyOlder copies by replacement statement request, 2 to 5 business days

A few details catch firms out.

  • CommBank dropped OFX and QIF from new NetBank. If your import routine relied on an OFX file from a CBA client, it now gets a CSV, and that CSV still needs reshaping for your ledger.
  • ANZ only exports transactions for open accounts. For a closed ANZ account, the PDF statement is all you get.
  • NAB keeps 731 days of transaction history online. Anything older comes from the PDF statements.
  • Exports and statements differ. An export is a list of transactions for a date range. A statement is the bank's official record, with opening and closing balances you can check against.

When do Australian firms end up with PDF statements?

Even with a perfect feed, PDFs keep arriving. These are the cases we hear about most from Australian firms.

  • Feed gaps. A legacy feed stopped, a consent lapsed, or a data sharing delegate wasn't set up in time. Weeks of transactions are missing.
  • New clients. Xero's Australian page says feeds import up to 12 months of history on first connection, and up to 2 years with some banks. A client who is further behind than that needs the rest from statements.
  • Historic catch-up. Late lodgers arrive with a folder of statements covering several years.
  • Closed accounts. No feed can connect to an account that no longer exists. ANZ won't export transactions for it either.
  • ATO reviews and audits. The ATO or an auditor asks for transactions from a period the ledger never captured in full.
  • Missing months before BAS. A quarter can't be lodged until every bank account is complete for it.

That last one is about to get busy. The ATO's registered agent lodgment program lists 28 October 2026 as the standard due date for quarter 1 of 2026-27, and 25 November 2026 for agents lodging electronically. Westpac and ANZ feeds disconnect in QuickBooks within days of that concession date.

How do you fill a feed gap without duplicating transactions?

Duplicates happen when a statement import overlaps a period the feed already covered. Here is a general good-practice routine. Adapt it to your ledger and your firm's review process.

  1. Find the last transaction the old feed imported for that account. Note its date and the ledger balance at that point.
  2. Note the date the new Open Banking feed starts from. Intuit recommends the day you reconnect.
  3. Get the bank's PDF statement, or statements, covering the days in between. Statements are better than exports here, because they carry balances you can check.
  4. Trim the converted data to the gap only. Leave out anything on or before the last fed transaction, and anything on or after the new feed's start date.
  5. Check the opening balance of the trimmed data against the ledger balance from step 1. Then check the closing balance against the bank.
  6. Import, then reconcile in the ledger as normal. If a transaction appears twice, delete the imported copy, not the feed copy.

Mind the ledger's own limits. QuickBooks Online accepts .csv, .txt, .qbo or .ofx uploads of 350 KB or less, with up to 1,000 lines per upload. Its CSV needs three columns (date, description, amount) or four (date, description, credit, debit). Intuit recommends dd/mm/yyyy dates.

Why does converting statements by hand go wrong?

Typing a statement into a spreadsheet works for one page. Over a long statement, the same problems repeat.

Balances that won't agree

A transposed digit or a line typed twice across a page break throws the closing balance out. Finding the one bad line often takes longer than the typing did.

Dates in the wrong year or format

A statement that crosses 30 June or 31 December is the classic trap. Day and month can also swap when a CSV opens with US date settings. Either error puts transactions in the wrong BAS period.

Exports that don't match the ledger

A CommBank CSV, a NAB spreadsheet and an ANZ CSV each lay out columns differently. Every one needs reshaping before QuickBooks or Xero will take it.

Volume

One client's year of statements can run to dozens of pages. A firm with twenty clients in catch-up mode is looking at days of keying.

Where tofu fits

tofu reads PDF bank statements from any bank, with no page limits, and extracts every transaction line. Its review screen runs balance checks: opening and closing balance, credit and debit totals, and the running balance on each line. A statement holding several accounts or currencies gets split into one section per account.

What happens next depends on the ledger. This is where firms most often ask questions, so here it is plainly.

LedgerHow tofu delivers bank statements
XeroPublish direct to the Xero bank account through Bank Feeds (waitlisted, enabled per organisation), or export a Xero CSV
QuickBooks OnlineExport a QBO-ready file, then upload it under Settings, Import data, Bank data
MYOB and Zoho BooksBills and invoices publish direct to MYOB and Zoho Books. For bank statements, export a CSV, Excel or OFX file and use the ledger's own bank import
Other ledgersCSV, Excel, OFX or QuickBooks Desktop IIF export templates

Firms often ask why statements can't publish straight to QuickBooks Online when bills can. tofu's help centre describes the QuickBooks Online route for statements as a file you download and upload, not a direct publish. The file arrives already formatted for QuickBooks Online, so nobody reshapes columns.

A few limits are worth knowing for Xero. A statement can only be published to Xero once. Xero accepts statements dated within the past 12 months, with an end date no later than today. Bank Feeds publishing takes single account statements only. For older catch-up work or multi-account statements, export the Xero CSV instead.

tofu does not reconcile, lodge BAS or replace a live bank feed. It turns statements into clean, checked data, so the feed gap or the catch-up stops being a typing job. Reconciliation stays in your ledger.

WLP, a Xero Platinum Partner whose clients include Australian SMEs, cut bank statement processing from "15 min to 2 min" per page compared with manual Excel entry.

"The key thing for me is my colleagues adopting it."

Frequently asked questions

Why did my client's QuickBooks bank feed stop for Westpac, NAB or ANZ?

Intuit is disconnecting legacy bank feeds in Australian QuickBooks Online and moving them to Open Banking. NAB disconnected on 1 September 2026, with Westpac due on 18 November, ANZ on 24 November and CBA on 3 December. After disconnection, transactions stop importing until the client reconnects through Open Banking, or until you upload transactions manually.

How do I import missing bank transactions into QuickBooks Online in Australia?

Get the bank's statement for the missing dates, convert it, and upload it through QuickBooks Online's manual bank upload. QuickBooks accepts .csv, .txt, .qbo or .ofx files up to 350 KB and 1,000 lines each. Trim the file to the gap only, so it doesn't overlap the old feed or the new Open Banking feed.

How do I convert a CommBank bank statement to CSV?

NetBank exports transaction history as CSV, and new NetBank no longer offers OFX or QIF. For periods outside the export, or for a PDF eStatement, you need to extract the lines from the PDF. An extraction tool can turn the statement into a CSV formatted for Xero, QuickBooks Online or another ledger.

Can I get bank statements into Xero in Australia without a feed?

Yes. Xero accepts bank files in OFX, QIF, QBO, QFX or CSV formats exported from online banking. For PDF statements, tofu can export a Xero CSV or, where enabled, publish a single account statement direct to the Xero bank account if it is dated within the past 12 months.

How far back can I get statements from CommBank, Westpac, NAB and ANZ?

CommBank keeps eStatements online up to 7 years, and up to 2 years after an account closes. Westpac keeps closed account statements for 7 years. NAB shows up to 7 years of statements in Internet Banking. ANZ exports 2 years of transactions for open accounts and offers replacement statements by request.

Does tofu reconcile bank accounts?

No. tofu extracts and checks statement transactions, then publishes them or exports a file for your ledger. Matching and reconciliation happen in Xero, QuickBooks Online, MYOB or whichever ledger the client uses.

When is the quarter 1 BAS due for 2026-27?

The ATO lists 28 October 2026 as the standard due date for quarter 1 of 2026-27. Registered agents lodging electronically have until 25 November 2026 under the lodgment program.
